John Jewell

John is a self taught carver who has been working with a knife since childhood. His early carvings were ‘relief’s’ and small birds. He progressed to doing delicately feathered ducks with natural finishes. His love for the old style carving techniques soon led him to carve antique style birds.
His decoys are of his own design, not reproductions of earlier decoys. “I love to think of what the old time carvers would have had available for their projects, and I work accordingly. I much prefer using hand tools over power tools. I develop a ‘feel for the bird’ that way.”
His carvings have garnered many awards, and can be found in collections throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.
John was co-founder of the Penobscot Bay Carvers and Artist’s Association, and was one of the original organizers of the Maine Coast Competition, held in Belfast. He is currently a member of the Maine Woodcarver’s Association and the National Woodcarver’s Association.
