Scrimshaw has an ancient heritage. Engraving or carving on hard surfaces such as bone, teeth, tusks and shells goes back to the Stone Age and has been practiced in all cultures. Boredom on long sea voyages was often relieved by doing scrimshaw relating to nautical activities. Today, with whale ivory no longer used, different materials are used such as the tagua nut, deer and moose antlers,pre-historic mammoth ivory as it is uncovered from the melting glaziers. Nice that this art form still exists!
