Thomas Merriam

Thomas Merriam is a Maine native. He started carving at the age of 12. His grandfather would hire Tom to do relief carvings in log benches. At the age of 19, Tom graduated from The New England Conservatory of Music as a Piano Technician and went to work rebuilding pianos. Still carving in his spare time, by age 26 Tom was carving birds for commissions and galleries.
In 1982, Tom was hired as a wood carver for a sign company in North Conway, New Hampshire, and over the next five years earned six national awards to his credit in Dimensional Sign Design. In 1985, he went into business for himself as a piano craftsman continuing to do custom carving contract work for a local New Hampshire sign company.
Tom’s carvings are made of basswood and hand carved. He stones and burns in feather detail and finishes with acrylic paints. Tom’s specialty is miniatures; however, he will often carve full size and has been known to carve Bald Eagles with full wingspans of six feet.
Tom now resides in Skowhegan, Maine where his career focus is wildlife carving and watercolor painting.
